Compose Music Easier by Limiting Options

Often sitting down to compose a new piece of music, one can become paralyzed by the "blank slate". This happens to writers of books, painters, sculptors and other creative people in creative endeavors. In this article though, we will focus on the composing of music, and getting past that initial hurdle with a strategy known as limitation and also looking at imitation.

Like a sculptor, writing music is about taking a block of time, whether that be a 3 minute pop song or a one hour symphony, and chiseling it out to reveal the finished piece that tells a story and/or conveys an emotion to the listener. The key is to figure out what tools will best serve you in the carving of time.

A good general place to begin, is to consider the form of the piece. Different types of music will dictate different types of form to fit into the genre. This can be a great beginning to get the juice flowing past the inertia of starting, as you now will have a road-map and a direction to proceed. Analyzing the forms and structures of music that appeal to you, will give you a road-map to follow in your own composition.

Some will look at starting with a particular form as constraining, but in truth, the listener is also expecting a certain form within limits, and you want to give it to them. This does not limit you, as you can add your own unique twists to the form, thus developing your own voice within that form. Also consider combining different forms together to add a different spin on a genre.

After deciding on a basic form for the construction of your musical journey, the next step is to focus on the key or keys of the piece. Each key inherently adds a certain mood or flavor to the piece, so choose one that is in line with the emotion you are trying to convey. A good tip is to listen to music from composers that are in line with your chosen mood for your piece, and dissect it, thus revealing a good starting point.

You might already have a melody you have made from singing, writing, or picked out on an instrument. Try putting some harmonic accompaniment together with it, staying in the framework of your chosen form to get the piece fleshed out. Have an explorer mentality and "go with the flow", to see where the piece takes you.

Every piece of music you create doesn't have to earth shaking unique. A good beginning is to emulate your favorite composers and throw in a few unique twists of your own. Over time, as you compose more and more, you will discover your own unique voice. Learning the language and speaking more and more is the way to become fluent in the language of music.

There is no right way to proceed in musical composition. Any path that gets you to your destination, a piece of music whether finished or just fleshed out is the right way to advance. There are as many ways to travel this road, as there are composers. In the end you must trust your own instincts and proceed with confidence that what you are creating reflects who you are, and what you are trying to express.

In the end, the more you compose, the better you will get and the more easily music will flow out of you. Remember, especially in the beginning, that limiting your choices can get you past that blank canvas and on your way towards your goal of being a fluent composer.
